If you trade perpetual futures on Binance, you will notice a charge called the "funding rate" every 8 hours. Sometimes you pay it, sometimes you receive it. This mechanism may sound complicated, but understanding it can significantly help your trading strategy and cost management. Funding Rate Basics

Why Funding Rates Exist

Perpetual contracts have no expiration date, unlike delivery contracts that automatically settle on a specific date. This creates a problem -- without a mechanism to keep the contract price aligned with the spot price, the two could diverge further and further apart.

The funding rate is this balancing mechanism. It requires periodic payments between long and short holders, keeping the contract price closely anchored to the spot price.

How It Works

  • When the funding rate is positive: Longs pay shorts. This indicates more bullish positions in the market, and the fee discourages excessive long positions.
  • When the funding rate is negative: Shorts pay longs. This indicates more bearish positions in the market, and the fee discourages excessive short positions.

Settlement Times

Binance perpetual futures funding rates are settled every 8 hours:

  • 00:00 UTC+8
  • 08:00 UTC+8
  • 16:00 UTC+8

Only users holding positions at the settlement time pay or receive the funding rate. If you close your position before settlement, you do not need to pay.

How to Check the Funding Rate

In the Binance App

  1. Open the Binance App and tap "Futures"
  2. Select a trading pair (e.g., BTC/USDT Perpetual)
  3. Above the candlestick chart, you will see the "Funding Rate" and a countdown timer

It displays something like: "Funding Rate 0.0100% | Countdown 02:35:16"

Understanding the Values

  • 0.0100%: At the next settlement, long holders pay short holders 0.01% of their position value
  • -0.0050%: At the next settlement, short holders pay long holders 0.005% of their position value

How the Funding Rate Is Calculated

Formula

Amount you pay (or receive) = Position Value x Funding Rate

Example

Suppose you hold a long position in the BTC/USDT perpetual contract with a position value of 10,000 USDT and a funding rate of 0.01%:

Fee = 10,000 x 0.01% = 1 USDT

Every 8 hours you pay 1 USDT to short holders. Three times a day totals 3 USDT.

Effect of Leverage

Leverage does not directly affect the funding rate calculation, but it amplifies your position value. If you use 100 USDT margin with 10x leverage, your position value is 1,000 USDT, and the funding rate is calculated on 1,000 USDT.

Financial Data

How Funding Rates Affect Trading

Long-Term Holding Costs

If you hold a long position and the funding rate stays positive, you pay three times a day, which steadily erodes your margin. Some altcoins can have funding rates as high as 0.1% or even 0.3%, making daily costs substantial.

Market Sentiment Indicator

The funding rate can serve as a reference for market sentiment:

  • Extremely high rate (e.g., above 0.1%): The market is overly optimistic with extreme bullish sentiment, possibly nearing a short-term top
  • Extremely low or deeply negative rate: The market is overly pessimistic with extreme bearish sentiment, possibly nearing a short-term bottom
  • Rate near zero: Bullish and bearish forces are relatively balanced

Arbitrage Opportunities

Some advanced traders exploit funding rates for arbitrage:

When the funding rate is extremely high, they simultaneously buy BTC on the spot market and short BTC on the futures market. This way, they are unaffected by price movements in either direction but collect the funding rate paid by longs every 8 hours. This is known as "funding rate arbitrage."

How to Use Funding Rates to Optimize Trading

Avoid High-Rate Settlement Periods

If the funding rate is very high (e.g., above 0.05%), consider briefly closing your position before settlement and reopening afterward. While you risk price movement, the funding rate savings may outweigh the cost.

Choose the Favorable Side

If you do not have a strong directional conviction, consider taking the side that receives the funding rate. For example, when the funding rate is positive, going short lets you collect the rate.

Watch for Tokens with Abnormal Rates

Some altcoins may have persistently high or low funding rates, creating arbitrage opportunities. However, be mindful of liquidity and other risks associated with these tokens.

FAQ

Is there a cap on the funding rate?

Binance funding rates typically fluctuate between -0.75% and 0.75%, but extreme market conditions may push them higher.

Do I pay the funding rate if I only hold a position briefly?

You only pay at the settlement times (every 8 hours). If you open and close a position between two settlement times, you do not pay any funding rate.

Where is the funding rate deducted from?

It is deducted from your futures account balance (cross-margin mode) or from the position margin (isolated-margin mode).

Can I view historical funding rates on the Binance App?

Yes. You can view a trading pair's historical funding rate data on the futures information page.

Safety Tips

  • Monitor cumulative funding rate costs for long-term positions
  • Do not blindly short just because the funding rate is high -- the market may continue rising
  • Funding rate arbitrage appears risk-free but carries execution risk and capital efficiency concerns
  • Combine funding rate analysis with other indicators for a comprehensive view of market sentiment
  • Before trading futures, understand all costs including trading fees and funding rates
